The Room

A restless rascal
lies awake, sniffing at the
heavy air.

The smooth, waxy, yellow bark
plastered to the branch,
with a fine graphite tip writes
a feeble attempt.
He evades sleep’s warm invitation and forgoes
the soft, welcoming feathers of the pillow.

He hears white noise
from downstairs,
and then a scream that
quickens his heart.

He looks around the endless sea of images,
filled with stars and celebrities
and a fantasy world that makes him wish
he wasn’t writing this poem right now.

He sees a cover on a shelf,
a novel by Lewis Carroll,
in which a young lady chases a scampering rabbit
who believes he’s in mortal peril.
A pair of twins, Tweedledum and Tweedledee
but this is as far as he goes,
and he decides to enter the dreamless doze.
