Elise Tiani

Dear Clifford,

I'm sorry for making you fat.
I know for a fact it's my fault,
But when it's me you stare at,
Guilt just overflows.  It's your
Starving face and pleading eyes that
Keep me from saying no.

Even though you love to eat,
They say that's not okay,
And when, once more, we see the vet,
She tells us right away:
"If you keep on stuffing Cliffy,
He will explode someday."

I'm sorry, I should have paid attention,
I should have understood,
Giving you all that sausage,
Certainly wouldn't be good,
But it's all because of your eyes,
Your eyes that just cannot be withstood.

Starting today you're on a diet,
And I've learned my lesson too,
Never feed the dog sausage
Or he'll explode on you.
So truly I want to say "I'm sorry, although
Even a million apologies would be too few."
