Learning How to Bat

I tell him to bend his knees,
Be ready for the ball.
Keep your eyes on the prize.
When the time is right,
Swing!
I stand behind him,
Moving his rigid body,
Like an unoiled robot.
As I let go of his hands,
While he strains his knees in an awkward position
That he calls "bent."
He looks ready,
But when I move back to pitch,
He unwinds, unable to hold his form,
Standing like he didn't hear a word I said.
I sigh, but laugh, and try to show him, again,
A good batting stance.
Each time I reposition him,
He seems a bit more comfortable at the plate.
So I lob the ball slowly to him,
He throws the bat at me.
I guess that is that,
Learning how to bat.
