Lest we Forget

What have we forgotten,
That we must remember,
Every eleventh day of November.

Have we forgotten a moment too soon?
The lives of those who lie in Verdun.

Have we forgotten the ultimate obscenity
The slowly fading breath of humanity
Have the armies, the robbers of life,
Murdered the memory of the endless strife
Have we forgotten the sacrifice
Of those who survived to live it twice.

Have we forgotten what we saw?
Humanities single fatal flaw.
Is the memory lost in the well?
Amidst the sound of artillery shells.
Amidst the echos of those gone deaf.
Amidst recitations of prayers and last breaths.

Have we forgotten those entombed in trenches
Those whose thirst remain forever unquenched
Have we forgotten the gas and the tanks
Those loss of brave soldiers defending our flanks
Have we forgotten those fearless men
Who died to give meaning to “Never Again”

The fruits of a war ill begotten,
Is what we must try to remember.
Every eleventh day of November.
Lest we forget...
