Emily Foley

Invincible

I quickly strain my neck to look back,
Out the open window of my mom’s grey minivan,
My hair swirling around my face,
I flash my gaze back at the past,
And see the disappearing city’s lights,
Shinning distantly like lonely stars,
In the darkness of the infinite sky.
The buildings are ambiguous,
But the lights never cease to shine bright.

And faster still I face forward.
Hair now flying far behind.
The cool summer air,
Softly whispers its secrets,
Just skimming across my skin
Making my eyes water slightly.
And the refreshing night wind,
Reaching deep into my heart
Is inspiring my every thought.

The incessant sound of wind,
Whipping swiftly past my ears.
Yet everything is silent.
And everything is calm,
Like the open ocean on a clear day,
Like the world is standing still waiting for me to catch up.
And that perfect song is playing,
The radio turned up too high,
Singing to the beat of my dreams.

And for that moment,
The present is the only thing that really matters,
And the future is mine for the claiming,
Thoughts and ideas running through my head
And as we drive onwards up Route 2,
Into the impending shadows,
Blinded by the darkness,
I close my eyes
And throw my head back.

I am invincible.
And even the unimaginable is within my sight.
