Winter Madness

Sad plates of ice
shift on the shores
of finally melting rivers.

Thick snow blankets
melt in one afternoon
carving a muddy obstacle course.

Fast drops
off leafless branches
shock my chapped lips.

Pools of ice water
between walls of dirt brown slush
sink into my thin socks.

For weeks I wished
the infinite winter
would end

but not like this.
