The Ring

its small diamond
a bright beacon of devotion
held by two gold cords
around her fourth finger
removed only to cook and to clean
dutifully replaced on her strong hand

its small diamond
a single tear of frustration
fixed in its setting
forgotten for several days at a time
when restless and weary hands
found it too heavy to replace

its small diamond
a shard of ice
muted by thick motes of dust
unworn for several years
with nothing but fine wrinkles
encircling her fourth finger
