Corey Michon

Closing Night

I sit here, smiling.
Across from me, a a girl asks,
"How are you, Corey?"
I reply, "Great, actually."
and it's true.
She smiles too.

We look around the table where we sit
With thirty other adolescents
Sitting and smiling, talking
All of us.

We listen to the boy on our right
Belting Beyonce,
Because he can, and he knows he can.
We look to our left to watch four boys beatboxing
And I laugh
And she laughs
Because they can, and they know they can.

At both ends of the table,
We hear reenactments of this weekend's events
And impersonations of famous celebrities
I smile,
She smiles.

I look at her.
"And how are you?"
She whispers,
"I'm taking a mental picture"
And I nod.
Because at this moment,
I know how she feels
how we all feel.
Because at this moment,
Life is perfect.
