Sunlight

Even in the desert where she walked

The sunlight came from her footsteps

And the sky, a pale, full open blue

Thanks her for each gentle foot-fall.

That’s how I remember

Life, energy, happiness

An open sky, made corporeal.

Once I likened her to a well

And once she likened me to corn

A distinction my hair resents

Now I resolve to likem not to liken

And I find myself content.

Words seem so inadequate

To capture her and pin her soul down

To place ‘who she is’ under a web of words or

A cell of syllables.

Now I feel I’m gushing

So my words will cease

But to her I say thank you

And may your years increase.
