Always Be

I hear what has happened

And cannot comprehend its meaning.

Do you understand it?

I can’t pretend to know

And feel the things you do.

What should I say?

I want to make this easier

And postpone the pain for a moment.

What can I do?

I try to distract you

And give you a second of joy.

Will I ever succeed?

I see your smiles

And I hear you laugh.

Are you disguising your sorrow?

I listen to you reminisce

And hope you will never forget.

Which memories will stay with you?

I miss the light in your eyes

And look for a hint of peace.

Will it ever return?

I hope you can see beyond this

And know it cannot be explained.

Who do you blame?

I feel the weight of your tears

And recognize how deep the pain is.

Will it ever lessen?

I know you miss him

And he will never be replaced.

Who could take the place of a father?

I watch your mom’s careful movements

And can sense the void in her life.

Can time really heal this deep a pain?

I will be here as you grow

And begin to see him in your eyes; your character.

He will always be.

With profound respect and love for the family of Peter Culman.
